Director James Wan is about to return underwater, to the heart of the ocean, and having fun with his mate Arthur Curry. The filmmaker took to his Instagram on Thursday to reveal that the title of Aquaman 2 is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Warner Bros. then confirmed it on Twitter and at io9.
Wan has been working on the film for quite some time, and his post (which you can see below) makes it seem like production is getting closer and closer. Not much is known about the plot, beyond what we can glean where the first movie left off. Jason Momoa will return as Aquaman himself, Arthur Curry, who is now the rightful King of Atlantis following his defeat of his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) in the original film. Of course, he will be joined by Mera (Amber Heard). The end credits scene of the last movie also teased that Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) could also return, although this has not been confirmed. Dolph Lundgren, who plays King Nereus of the Xebellian people, also said he was coming back. And oddly enough, it’s this last bit that is the key.
What is the lost kingdom?
A long time ago a Aquaman a poster came out that said “Unite the Seven”. Fans figured out that meant seven members of the Justice League, but really, it meant the seven kingdoms of Atlantis: Trench, Brine, Xebellian, Fisherman’s Kingdom, Atlanteans, Deserters and a Long-Lost Kingdom. Yes. This “Lost Kingdom”. It sounds even more than the first movie, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom It will be about Arthur attempting to unite all the kingdoms of the ocean and learn more about why this kingdom was lost along the way.
You also have to assume that there will be a mention of something else going on in the DC Universe. What does it mean to post–Zack Snyder Justice League, we have no idea. But Shazam is over there. Black Adam too, as this movie comes out. There is also The suicide squad and Wonder Woman, so who knows?
James Wan knows it. And he brings Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in theaters on December 16, 2022. Let us know what you think of the new track below.
