It’s kinda crazy to think about it, but after a extremely long and winding road, Black Widow is finally out in less than a month. It will be more than two years after the last Marvel movie, Avengers: Endgame, is hitting theaters, which means people are going to be flocking to the film, but they might be surprised by what they see.
In an interview with fandango, director Cate Shortland discussed the movies she watched before filming Black Widow, and it looks like watching Marvel’s’ Infinity Saga ‘was only part of the prep,’ First we looked at things like There is no country for old people. And then we looked at things like Thelma and Louise. And the Marvel movie – people who saw it said it reminded them of it -[is] Captain America: The Winter Soldier. “But that’s not all. Even though Shortland didn’t get into more specific movies, there were other inspirations:“ I watched a lot of fight movies and a lot of stuff where we watched them. armies and militias, and then I put women in those roles.
Fighting films make sense, but “armies and militias” is very curious. We know that Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) is not the only Black Widow, but one of the many assassins produced by the Widow program. But I don’t think they would be considered an army, per se … unless the Widow program was born out of an army of female soldiers in the past? It could be pretty cool. Cool too: this Black Widow clip that Fandango also debuted.
As you can see, two widows are chasing our Black Widow and her partner Yelena (Florence Pugh). The action is frantic to say the least and, according to Shortland, that scene alone took over three weeks to shoot. Additionally, a small (very small) featurette has been dropped that features other action scenes from the film, which look just as compelling:
And here’s another little one for you, with a really good look at the movie’s villain, the Taskmaster, to complete it all:
All three videos have dropped in the last few days. Hey, Marvel? We are well aware Black Widow is coming out next month and we’re very excited about it. You can relax a bit.
In addition to Johansson and Pugh, Black Widow stars David Harbor as Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz as Melina, and reportedly even has a cameo appearance by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. It premieres on Disney + July 9th.
