Less you’ll question everything that happens in this two-and-a-half-minute piece of Shawn levy free guy is probably for the best, because by the time you try to apply any form of consistent logic to it, it threatens to collapse as spectacularly as the life of its video game hero NPC.
But if you do not engage your old gray matter, free guy– with Ryan Reynolds as Titular Guy, a bank teller NPCs in an online open world RGT-meets-Fortnite Battle Royale pastiche apparently led by a villainous Taika Waititi– looks like a whole bunch of insane fun action. Liberally taking his video game influence roots and running with him for a madman, filled with explosion festival of effects, the film follows Guy’s rote life as a cog in the machine until a chance encounter with a woman named Milly (Kill Eve Jodie Comer) makes her realize that being a protagonist in the game is way more fun than be an NPC.
It is from there of course that free guy goes a little awkward, turning Guy’s miserable life into a gun mashup of RGT, Need of speed, and a bit of classic Mario or Sonic Styling platform and power-up collection for good measure. Does it almost make no sense? Perhaps. Does his understanding of any kind of video game logic or mechanics go out the window almost immediately? Absolutely. But Taika Waititi puts an ax in a server rack at one point, and it’s pretty funny.
According to the press release, the film also has cameos from “sone of the most influential personalities in the video game world ”: Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott, Seán William “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, and Daniel “DanTDM” Middleton. You know, if it’s something that interests you.
free guy hits theaters August 13.
